Blog

If you have ever come across anyone who has tried installing DotNetNuke on a Network Solutions hosting package you might hear some colorful language and then you get to hear about their new hosting company.

First, I am in no way advocating or endorsing Network Solutions over any other shared hosting service.  I will say that they have made some improvements to their hosting packages in recent months (check out Network Solutions hosting prices here) and they now provide unlimited disk space and bandwidth.

Regardless of my own preferences, they are a large company and you may have an account with them today or a client of yours may have one down the road and I thought it was worth pointing out some best practices that I’ve found to help improve your DNN experience which is what the purpose of this Blog.

The one thing you find not only with Network Solutions, but many hosting providers is lack of documentation on properly installing and configuring DNN.

To help document my own procedures for helping clients who have Network Solutions and help other who may be a Network Solutions customer I have put together 30 Steps to Successfully Installing DotNetNuke on a Network Solutions Shared Hosting Package

This document may help answer some of your questions regarding properly configuring DNN for the best performance and long term success of your DotNetNuke portals.

Below are some of the items I address:

  • Moving the installation to the Root folder for improved URL’s and SEO
  • Enabling the Human Friendly Url’s
  • Performance Settings to make your DNN site run faster
  • Enabling daily Website Backups
  • Enabling daily Database Backups

Hi
Thanks for these tips they are great! I wish I had them before I installed DDN on NS.

One question I have is that I installed DNN on the NS domain as shown in your pdf and set the real domain to point to that folder as the domain was hosted with DoDaddy. I am now having the domain transfered but is there a way that I can have the real domain replace the NS domain without having to re intall the whole thing?

Thanks

You must assign the domain name in the NS Hosting Control Panel to your DNN install folder.

Make sure you have the Portal Aliases in DNN setup for the domain.

You wont have to reinstall it.

Thanks for this tip!! I already built my DNN website on network solutions hosting, can I still follow these steps to move it to the root? Also, will this work for godaddy hosting as well?

I have moved existing/established DNN sites on Network Solutions without a problem. Just have to change the domain pointer from the domain.com/htdocs/dnn to the domain.com/htdocs directory.

I would assume GoDaddy would be the same, but I would find someone who has done it successfully before you do.

Thanks!
